Comparing free static web hosts

edited November 2020 in General

Hi everyone,

I've been hovering around for a few months, so decided it was about time I made a post!

I have recently started https://cyberhost.uk to post all kinds of tech tips and tutorials.

In a recent post I compared some free static web hosts and I thought some of you guys might like:

Thanks for all the feedback and support :)

I'll look into adding some of the hosts suggested and the features offered.

  • How about Firebase? Works great for static sites.

AwardSpace, they are a stable free host that existed "since the dawn of time".
I still have active free hosting account with them, still working, that i've forgotten it's control panel password and even my e-mail password from that era.

Kudos to the peope from AwardSpace!

I somehow have two accounts on AwardSpace.
First account was registered on 2006-12-08 and it's no longer working.
Second account was registered on 2011-07-23 and I can still login.

In order to not forget password, post your password on Twitter and forums.
My password was on the top five comments of DEV Community last week and highly rated on the wrong green forum.

GitHub Pages doesn’t have proper SPA support, so I‘d prefer Netlify

Care to elaborate? SPA does ring a bell but I'm not sure what you're referring to here exactly..

    Single Page Application, I believe.

    Yup, Single Page Apps.
When there is a fresh page load for a url like example.tld/foo, where /foo is a frontend route, the GitHub Pages server returns 404 because it knows nothing of /foo.

Due to popular request, Vercel and AwardSpace have now been added to the post.

I have also added a section to show the current uptime of the different services. Hopefully, this will be interesting in a few months!

  • Most free hosting out there that supports PHP will also support static HTML pages.
static web hosting is not a feature, but the absence of features.

You can’t compare Netlify or Vercel to a regular hosting.
Integrated CI/CDN, global CDN, auto deploy etc...

  • Good to see this thread criss crossing:

    • the “new age” hosting by Netlify etc.
    • “old school” shared hosting
    • Applications

To add to the mix, now add Cloudflare - static site hosting via CF workers.
    And
Static Content Management Systems: FlatPress, HTMLY...

For the interested reader, the article can add loads of value. For everyone else, it will confuse them for a long time.

  • That's why it's called the JAMstack era!

I'm thinking of creating a dedicated post on Cloudflare Workers as there's a wide range of different use cases.

Would you guys be interested in a comparison of CDN providers?
