[email protected] shutting down.

As long as I have been online and can remember this was a thing, feels odd that it will not be a thing any more.

  • I saw this the other day.

I used to run [email protected] years ago, on an old Cyrix 333

  • It's odd. Anyway. If this shutdown may shift some tiny resources to projects like Rosetta or [email protected], I'd say it's nice.

I think I first ran it on a PII 233MMX

  • I've been running [email protected] since 2006, on my laptop, BeagleBone Black, and Android phones.
Now what am I going to do with all the spare CPU power?
If I mine coins, I'll have to pay taxes.

I was crunching diehard few decades ago for WCG which is in the same category as Seti.

Sure brings back good and bad memories.

Highly recommend checking out BOINC instead, and among that the World Community Grid project. Goes towards a blend of good stuff - medical cures, clean energy etc.

For phones and tablets there is also Dreamlab - vodafone sponsored project - crunches similar stuff while your phone is charging overnight.

You can also deploy BOINC in docker form...though that takes some doing. Been meaning to type up a post on that.

  • I am glad to hear that they shutdown because they are done processing all the collected data, not because of lack of funding.

SETI may be shutting down, but if anyone has spare computing power and wants to donate their resources towards a worthy cause, [email protected] is taking up the COVID19/SARS-COV-2 fight.

    https://foldingathome.org/2020/03/10/covid19-update/

[email protected] is very similar to SETI, in that it's using volunteered and distributed computing power, but this project is aimed at researching protein folding in order to find cures and potential treatments for common diseases and viruses. Here's some more info on what exactly [email protected] is all about and the objectives of the project - https://foldingathome.org/diseases/.

    What in tarnation?

  • They had a project running for Ebola too. Hopefully more people donate their CPU cycles to this than mine shitcoins.
